Past Educational Programming

The Heritage Center continues to explore opportunities to expand its educational programming beyond the confines of its Pine Ridge campus, offering opportunities for youth from the organization’s three schools and families from around the reservation an opportunity to view and learn more about Native American traditional and contemporary art, fostering a life-long appreciation for art in the world.  In the past, we have included:

Artist educational series

An artist educational series, geared toward Lakota artists, covers topics such as legal, financial and communication issues. During 2011 and 2012, four separate training sessions are sponsored by The Heritage Center, where experts in each topic were invited to speak. Topics of the training were based on feedback receive from Native artists who have expressed the need to strengthen their business skills through improved entrepreneurial strategies.

Native arts marketing

Held in August during the Oglala Nation’s annual powwow, this training was focused on Native arts marketing so that Native artists can learn how to better market and display their products. The marketing event allowed artists to practice their new skills and knowledge at an actual Art Market where they garnered feedback about their displays and interaction with potential customers.
