Red Cloud Students Learn Connection Between Song and Culture

Red Cloud's singing and drumming class, taught by Russ Cournoyer (center), gathers before their instrument just before digging into a lesson about a traditional Lakota prayer song.

The Lakota singing and drumming class has been offered at Red Cloud Indian School for nearly a decade and adds to the cultural component of Red Cloud's multidimensional curriculum."

"Most students are exposed to simple songs such as the Flag Song, Honoring Song, and some prayer songs," says Russ. "In this class they learn the spiritual importance of singing and how it is closely tied to everything that is done within Lakota culture."
