Red Cloud Celebrates Catholic Schools Week

posted January 30, 2015

National Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education across the nation. The theme for 2015 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” To celebrate, Red Cloud Indian School held special Masses, school spirit projects, writing contests, and community events for staff, students and families. Through these events, Red Cloud and our sister school, Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary, focused on the value of spiritual formation education for our students and our community.

At Red Cloud High School the students spent the last week answering the question: What do you like about attending a Lakota-Catholic School?  With these answers, the students designed a bulletin board to be displayed during the week throughout the month of February. Students also began their school days with a special prayer to commemorate Catholic Schools Week.

In the elementary schools, faculty developed a week full of activities to bring smiles to students faces and encourage faithful reflection. Below is a list of activities from the week.

Monday:
There was an morning assembly in Holy Rosary Church on the Red Cloud campus explaining the significance of the week. Elementary students at both schools started essay and poster projects on "Why they attend Red Cloud/Our Lady of Lourdes" in their classes. This day was also 'School Spirit Day.'

Tuesday:
This day was ‘Support Staff Appreciation Day.’ Students wrote thank you letters to custodians, cafeteria staff, and bus drivers, recognizing the school as a connected community of faith and service.

At Our Lady of Lourdes, the kindergarten, first and second grade classes cheered for their third through eighth grade classmates as they competed in a Our Lady of Lourdes/Catholic Schools knowledge bowl. This was a very exciting event that had students and staff at the edge of their seats as the classes competed. This day was also Crazy Hair Day at both schools! Wednesday:
Wednesday was ‘Buddy Reading Day.’ Fifth through eighth grade students brought library books to read to their younger classmates. Students were also encouraged to wear their favorite sports teams’ jerseys and hats.

Thursday:
‘Parent and Teacher Appreciation Day’ took place on Thursday when students wrote thank you letters to their parents or one of their spiritual formation teachers. At Our Lady of Lourdes, it was also 'OLL School Spirit Day' and students were encouraged to wear blue and gold to school.

Friday:
Friday was a big day at both elementary schools! The day started with a prayer service, but there was something a little different about everyone — Students all wore their pajamas to school! In the afternoon another prayer service was held before watching a film together with both Red Cloud and Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary.
