Healthy Life Choices Seminar Asks Students to Consider Personal Relationships

posted January 29, 2015

Did you know up to 60% of High School Students experience dating violence before graduation? And, of those who experienced it, 25% of teens will tell no one.

Today, each and every Red Cloud High School student learned about statistics like these, how to recognize an abusive relationship and what to do to keep themselves and others safe. Students met with Devaney Buffalo, a case manager from Working Against Violence, Inc. (WAVI), a nonprofit committed to responding to the needs of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the greater Rapid City area.

Ms. Buffalo led students through an engaging and interactive presentation on how to recognize violence in a variety of common scenarios. Students were given opportunities to practice what they had learned in a ‘red light, green light’ game where the group discussed possible scenarios of teenage domestic violence before judging if the relationship was healthy (green) or violent (red).

With only 30% of teens saying they have intervened to help a friend after seeing a violent incident and evidence of dating abuse starting as early as the sixth grade, Red Cloud Indian School’s counseling department was glad to bring Ms. Buffalo in for the presentation.

This presentation was part of an ongoing series at Red Cloud Indian School called Healthy Life Choices, which brings speakers and holds events on topics from nutrition to cyberbullying to safe driving techniques and more.
