The Red Cloud Indian Art Show: Tracing its Impact Over 50 Years

The Red Cloud Indian Art Show is a truly one-of-a-kind. It's the largest and longest-running Native art exhibition of its kind. It's one of only a few Native art shows held in an indigenous community. And it welcomes works from all Native artists regardless of their experience in the art world, encouraging them to share their talent and to guide the narrative around indigenous experience.

Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Heritage Center recently opened an exhibition exploring the impact of the Red Cloud Indian Art Show—on campus, in the community, and in the art world. The gallery walls are lined with pieces from each of the show’s five decades, from the late 1960’s to today. Together, these pieces trace how the Art Show spurred the growth of The Heritage Center’s 10,000-piece permanent collection, how the styles, media, and subject matter addressed by Native artists has continued to evolve, and how the show has supported the careers of diverse Native artists from across the country, giving them a presence and voice.
