Six Red Cloud teams given state academic achievement awards

Red Cloud High School recently received word that several of its sports teams are recipients of 2011-2012 South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) Academic Achievement Team Awards.

The awardees include the volleyball team, wrestling team, girls’ cross-country, boys’ cross-country, girls’ basketball, and the cheerleading team (who won two separate awards).

The Academic Achievement Team Award program began during the 1996-1997 school year, and is designed to recognize varsity athletic teams and fine arts groups for their academic excellence. The SDHSAA believes that high school students learn in two distinct ways: inside the classroom, and outside the classroom on the stage and the athletic field. A central criteria for teams receiving the award is that the members must have a collective grade point average of at least 3.0.

Athletic Director Jennifer Schaer is very proud of the teams for receiving the seven certificates. She said, “Red Cloud student-athletes work hard both in the classroom and on the field/court. This award shows their accomplishments, and it is an honor for those team achievements to be recognized. The team names will be added to the Academic Team Award plaque that hangs in the field house.”

Congratulations to all of the recognized 2011-2012 student-athletes on this outstanding accomplishment!
