Red Cloud High School will host a free admissions testing day on Wednesday, March 30 for all students interested in enrolling at the high school during the 2011-2012 school year. Prospective students will be tested in the areas of English, math, reading and science.

The tests are offered to determine a student’s ability to succeed in classes offered at Red Cloud. The format of the testing is the same as a college admissions standardize test. Red Cloud uses ACT Explore, which provides an evaluation on where students may be strong or weak in their studies. In addition to testing in English, math, reading and science, students will also be required to write a short, timed essay to understand their skills in composition.

“Part of the test also includes an interest inventory to allow us to see where we can help them in certain areas to ready them for college,” says Lenny Clifford, director of guidance. “We want students who are interested in learning. Our job as educators is to give them the best possible education we can so that they can accomplish their goals in education.”

The test is primarily for eighth graders who will be freshmen in high school next year. There are a limited number of spots available in the sophomore, junior and senior classes that students can test for as well.

“We want students from all areas of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, so the testing is open to all who are interested,” Clifford adds.

Students must register in the front office of the high school by 8:15 a.m. on March 30. The test will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. in the Linsenmeyer Room, which is adjacent to Cuny Commons. Testing takes about four hours. Students will be released around 12:15 p.m.
