Students raise funds for St. Jude's

Spring 2011 Red Cloud Country

What started out as a fundraiser for a middle school dance for students at Our Lady of Lourdes and Red Cloud Elementary School evolved into a fundraiser for children with cancer. Last month, middle school students raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The fundraiser started as a bake sale to fund a DJ and supplies for the dance.

However, when a staff member challenged the students to donate their proceeds to a charity of their choice and offered to pay for the dance, the students turned to St. Jude’s.

“We thought it was a great idea, and immediately, the first charity we thought of was St. Jude’s because of our math teacher, Ms. [Kris] House,” says Isabella New Holy, a seventh grader at Red Cloud. “She lost her daughter to cancer a while back but she always talked about how great everyone at St. Jude’s was with the children and how much of an impact the hospital had toward her daughter’s treatment.”

“In a way, we hope to give back to the hospital for helping our teacher, but also for what they do to save the lives of children just like us,” says Matogi I’atala, also a seventh grader.
