Students from Red Cloud Indian School brought home six of eight awards from the 33rd Annual Pine Ridge Reservation Student Recognition Banquet on Monday, May 2, 2011 at Wolf Creek School.

Nominated by their teachers, administrators and other local community members, 58 students representing 13 elementary schools and three high schools gathered for the annual event, which recognized eighth graders and seniors in high school for their leadership and excellence in school. Students were awarded plaques for their accomplishments in academics, athletics and extra curricular activities.

This year’s award recipients from Red Cloud were:

  • Jaime Richards, Eighth Grade, Bill Cuny Citizenship Award
  • Tiana Spotted Thunder, Twelfth Grade, Bill Cuny Citizenship Award
  • Demcie Mesteth, Eighth Grade, Outstanding Extra-Curricular Award
  • DeAndra McLaughlin, Twelfth Grade, Outstanding Academics Award
  • Jo Beth Morrisette, Eighth Grade Outstanding Athletic Award
  • Tristen Long, Twelfth Grade, Outstanding Athletic Award

Robin Johnson, dean of students at Red Cloud High School, says she was very impressed with the dedication and hard work that went into the special night.

“It was great to see so many students, parents, educators, and tribal and community members come together to celebrate the amazing success stories of the future leaders of the reservation,” says Johnson. “I cannot stress how proud I am of all of Red Cloud Indian School’s nominees. They have all represented Red Cloud and Our Lady of Lourdes well with their many accomplishments, and I wish them the best of luck as they continue their studies.”

A committee of judges, made up of representatives from throughout the reservation, was brought together by the Shannon County school system to select the honorees. Only one student per school can be nominated for each respective category.
