News of the spread of Coronavirus/COVID 19 has brought a great deal of uncertainty and concern to Red Cloud and to our broader community. As one unified institution comprised of our four schools, our parish and its six churches, and The Heritage Center, we are all committed to doing everything we can to ensure the health of our staff, students and families, parishioners, artists and all others who are a part of Red Cloud’s thiyóšpaye—our extended family.

The good news is that there are many things we can do to protect ourselves and our communities and to slow the spread of COVID 19. Toward that end, Red Cloud will be taking the following steps:

Distance Learning in Our Schools: Red Cloud High School, Middle School, Elementary School, and Our Lady of Lourdes School will be shifting to distance learning for a two-week period, starting Monday, March 16th until March 27th, 2020. During this time we will continue to monitor and assess the latest health information and stay in close touch with students, parents, teachers, and support staff about any changes or possible extensions we may need to implement.

Suspending Outside Visits, Public Tours, and Events: In support of the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Executive Order issuing a temporary travel moratorium, we are suspending all public tours and postponing any scheduled visits from partners and supporters from outside the Pine Ridge Reservation. Our campuses will be closed to the general public starting on Saturday, March 14, and the Visitors Quarters in Drexel Hall will not be available to external visitors as well. Community gatherings and events, including athletic games, will not be held on campus until further notice.

Limiting Travel Outside the Pine Ridge Reservation: Red Cloud is suspending all work-related travel outside the region, and encouraging all staff to consider postponing any personal travel outside South Dakota until further notice.

Limiting Access to The Heritage Center: Also beginning on Saturday, March 14, The Heritage Center gallery and gift shop will be closed to all outside visitors (but continue to be open to staff and students). Buying days for artists will be suspended until further notice.

Protecting Red Cloud’s Parish: Masses will continue to be held at Red Cloud’s six Catholic churches across the reservation, but under the direction of the Diocese of Rapid City, pastoral staff are implementing policies to limit contact between parishioners and instructing parishioners to stay at home if they are feeling ill.

Our world’s understanding of Coronavirus/COVID 19 is changing rapidly. Please be assured we will be closely monitoring the latest health information and will communicate any updates to these policies as we make them.

Despite the need to limit our social interactions at this difficult time, please know the entire Red Cloud community is deeply grateful for the support of all our partners and friends, here on the reservation and across the country. Let’s continue to take care of each other during this difficult time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 605-867-1105 or makeadifference@redcloudschool.org.
