Red Cloud Celebrates Holy Week

Red Cloud Indian School will once again celebrate Holy Week with masses and other activities throughout the schools and parish community.

Early in the week students at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary in nearby Porcupine, SD performed the Passion of the Christ. With staff, students, family and alumni in attendance, the annual play is a fond memory for many community members and an event that many look forward to each year as a new class of students participate in telling the story.

On Good Friday at noon, another popular community event, annual 4D Good Friday Walk, will take place in Oglala.  The walk will start at the Loneman School and end at Our Lady of the Sioux Church, one of Red Cloud Indian School's six Catholic Churches, which make up one unified reservation-wide Parish.

During the walk, participants will stop at seven points along the route to pray before concluding the walk at Our Lady of Sioux, where all are invited to eat a light meatless pot-luck lunch in Br. Rene Hall. During World War II, the 4D Group, which holds the annual Good Friday Walk, started as a means for the different faith groups in the area to come together to pray. It has continued through the years with a monthly meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of every month alternating between the churches.

In addition to a number of masses held throughout the week, Bishop Robert Gruss from the Rapid City Diocese will return to the reservation for Easter Sunday Mass at St. Agnes Church in Manderson, SD, a few miles up the road from nearby Wounded Knee. The Mass will start promptly at 11:00am, and all are encouraged to attend!
