PROGRAM

Red Cloud Volunteers commit to working in grades K-12 at one of the three Red Cloud Schools on the reservation. Volunteers serve as classroom teachers, teacher’s aides, librarians, and other support staff in the schools, and also help drive the buses that transport Red Cloud students to and from school each day. The volunteer program extends well beyond the boundaries of school and classroom.

Aside from teaching in a new and often challenging environment, volunteers live in intentional community at one of three houses on the campuses of the Red Cloud School. Throughout the volunteer year, retreats and various community events help foster a sense of community and challenge the volunteers to live by the four values of the Red Cloud Program.

During the year of service, volunteer benefits include room and board, modest living and travel stipends, full health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), access to a volunteer car (shared with other volunteers), and tuition reimbursement for one course at Oglala Lakota College. Red Cloud Volunteers may also be eligible to enroll in the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps benefits include loan forbearance on all eligible student loans, and upon successful completion of their year, an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,350 to be applied toward past or future eligible student loans.
