Fr. George WInzenburgFR. GEORGE WINZENBURG SJ
President

Fr. George Winzenburg, who has a strong history walking hand-in-hand with the Lakota people, was named president of Red Cloud Indian School in the summer of 2010, and took office the following August. He is proud and honored to be part of a leading Native organization in the country.

Fr. Winzenburg is no stranger to Red Cloud or the Pine Ridge Reservation, having served on the institution’s board of directors from 2003-2009. Before taking the helm as president, he served as director of the Sioux Spiritual Center, and lead the Ministry Formation Program for the Diocese of Rapid City, which forms men and women for ministry in their parish as lay ministers or deacons.

As president of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he began the school’s Alumni Service Corps, founded with the belief that young people should serve as volunteers in the classroom, in the school community and in the neighborhood. After a 10-year tenure as president at Marquette University High, he became pastor of Gesu Parish in Milwaukee.

“Having worked in Native ministries and with the good people across the Diocese of Rapid City for the past eight years, I am eager to further the relationships already established and meet so many of the solid students and staff that are doing great things at Red Cloud,” Fr. Winzenburg says. “I see many opportunities for leadership development, specifically in the parishes, that can complement the formation of leaders that is taking place in the school.”

Fr. Winzenburg has a master of education in counseling education from Boston University, a master of divinity from Weston College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a bachelor’s degree in history from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
