Mr. Linn Cross Dog was born and raised in Pine Ridge, SD. After attending school in Pine Ridge for four years and Loneman school for four years, he attended Red Cloud Indian School (then Holy Rosary Mission) for his last four years. He started working at Red Cloud in June of 1968 in the Development Office making small wooden crosses that were included with the mailings at that time. In the mid-70's he became in charge of the mail room and oversaw all of the outgoing mail. In 1980, Fr. Earl Kurth, S.J., the Director at the time, asked him to work in the garage. Mr. Cross Dog was the sole mechanic overseeing the safety of the Red Cloud school buses and school vehicles. That same year, all of the Red Cloud School buses passed the SD State Trooper inspection on the first try for the first time-a record that continues each year to date. In 1995, Mr. Cross Dog was named Head of Transportation. He views his biggest challenge as maintaining the school buses in a safe condition. He knows the importance of a well-maintained bus traveling across isolated Reservation roads. The Red Cloud buses travel over 300,000 miles a year. Our buses outlast the buses at many other schools because of the expert care and maintenance done by Mr. Cross Dog. He and his wife, Henrietta, (who has worked at Red Cloud in the Development Office for many years) have raised four children all of whom are Red Cloud graduates. Mr. Cross Dog is fluent in the Lakota language and graciously answers many visitors' questions about Lakota culture and heritage.
