Founded in the early 1900s by Fr. Henry Grotegeers, SJ, Sacred Heart Church was built immediately south of the mass gravesite of the Wounded Knee Massacre. In 1973, during a period of severe civil unrest on the Pine Ridge Reservation, the original church burned down. In 1980, a new log cabin church was dedicated by Bishop Harold Dimmerling. |
