Founded by Jesuit Father Westropp, SJ the first St. Bernard's church was built in 1920. Silas Fills The Pipe served as the community's first catechist. Twenty-eight years later a violent storm blew the little church completely off Red Shirt Table. Soon after, Fr. Edward Gibbons, SJ supervised the rebuilding of St. Bernard's out of cinder blocks next to the St. Bernard's Cemetery.
On June 20 through the 22, 2006 the dream of Sr. Connie to have a vacation bible school happen at Red Shirt Table became a reality. Thanks to the work of a former Red Cloud Volunteer, Dino Pinto, who is now a teacher at Bishop Eustice High School in Pennsauken, NJ, ten students and another teacher journeyed with Dino to the reservation to teach "bible camp" on the edge of the Badlands.
There were 20 students who came everyday to St. Bernard's Church to read Bible stories, talk about the stories, do art activities around the stories, sing songs, pray, and of course, eat.
Br. Bill Foster, S.J., from the Maintenance Department at Red Cloud Indian School, even built an re outhouse (a real necessity) for the grounds at the church so that the bible school could take place there. A great bond of friendship and a real community was formed between the east coast and Red Shirt Table during their time together. And, of course, there is hope to repeat this again next summer! |
