Our Lady of the Sioux Parish - Oglala
The first sod and log church in the village community of Oglala, SD was also used as a meetinghouse. In 1916, Fr. Plasidus Sialm built a frame church named St. Elizabeth's with $750 donated by a woman whose first name was Elizabeth. In the 1960s Fr. Paul Steinmetz, SJ moved the church building located in the Wolf Creek community to Oglala. St. Elizabeth's became a meetinghouse and the new church was named Our Lady of the Sioux.
On June 4, 1999 a tornado swept through the Oglala area, totally destroying the Our Lady of the Sioux Parish complex. On June 2, 2001, Bishop Blaise Cupich dedicated the new Our Lady of the Sioux church, along with a new Brother Denny Ryan Center, and a new Brother Rene Hall. On June 5 through the 7, 2006, the youth of our Lady of the Sioux Parish in Oglala were treated to three days of a most enjoyable "Bible Camp." The School Sisters of Notre Dame of the St. Louis MO province have been leading the vacation bible school for three years. This year there were eight students, a sister and teacher from Notre Dame High School in St. Louis who came to the reservation to be with the youth of the Oglala area. Although the time was short the days were packed in the teaching, the activities, the games, the singing, the praying and even the eating.
Bible stories gave focus of the day. There was so much creativity in the planning and in the decorating of Br. Rene Hall. There were 25 children everyday. There were two women who helped with the cooking every day. Some great relationships were formed between students and teachers in these days of bible stories. Plans for next year are already in the making! |
