About the Instructor
Betsy Janis teaches the computer classes for Red Cloud Elementary and Middle School. Betsy was born and raised in New Mexico, and came to Pine Ridge in 1974. She is married and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Betsy attended Oglala Lakota College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She taught 3rd grade for 9 years prior to becoming a computer teacher. Her father sparked her interest in computers and continues to be her inspiration.

Curriculum

• Students in grades 1-5 learn how to organize information to write, or to solve problems using the Kidspiration program. Keyboarding begins with grade 3 and continues throughout grade 8.
• Grade 5 also learns word processing using Microsoft Word
• Grades 6 through 8 continue to organize information for writing and problem solving using the Inspiration program.
• Grade 6 learns about spreadsheets and chart-making using Microsoft Excel.
• Grade 7 learns about creating slide show presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.
• Grade 8 uses The Print Shop and various photo-editing software programs to assist them in creating their own invitations for graduation.
• All grades learn about safe internet use, and perform various tasks, using the internet.
