KINDERGARTEN

Our kindergarten students have almost mastered writing the ABC’s in the correct order and will continue to work on proper formation of the letters. We work on illustrating and writing simple sentences about personal experience or to retell parts of stories in class. We enjoy drawing pictures and writing to our pen-pals in St. Louis, Louisiana. Phonemic awareness is progressing nicely now and we are learning many sight words. We also have individual ABC Books in which we place special stickers and label them, stretching the words out to discover how they are spelled.

In Math we are doing more skip counting, addition concepts and money counting. In science we are just beginning our unit on habitats and survival elements. We have a variety of water and air experiments planned along with a dental health unit this semester. For Social Studies we will cover Martin Luther King and a number of presidents in February. It has been my experience that kindergarten students enjoy learning the names of continents so that will be another goal for our class.

Our year will conclude with our big Kindergarten celebration in May. The children will be learning poems and songs to present to parents. Many special awards and kindergarten certificates will be presented. A reception at the perish hall will complete our students first successful year in school.
