COMPUTERS

In computer classes at Our Lady of Lourdes, students will gain an understanding of the uses of a computer, software programs, and appropriate Internet usage. Students will also learn to recognize and name the hardware components of a computer. Primarily, they will learn and build on basic keyboarding skills according to grade level. As their keyboarding becomes stronger; towards the end of the first semester and throughout the second semester, students will learn to use the computer for research. They will gather their findings into a variety of projects utilizing some of the latest virtual technology available in the Mac OS X Leopard operating environment.

The computer lab consists of 23 iMacs and students learn how to navigate and use the functions of the Mac OS X operating environment. Students also learn to compose projects using Microsoft Office 2008 to include Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. Additionally, through lecture and projected display, students are shown how various projects might look in a pc environment, which utilizes Windows XP.

Web browsers employed are Safari and Firefox. Students learn to navigate the Internet responsibly, using a variety of search engines for research and educational recreation activities.
