Former president of Bridgewater State University visits Red Cloud Indian School

posted October 02, 2015

We were honored to welcome to campus Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria, president emeritus of Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts.

Dr. Mohler-Faria has brought about some great improvements and progress for our students since 2011. After watching the 20/20 Special "Hidden America: Children of the Plains" — featuring now Red Cloud High School senior Robert Looks Twice — he called ABC News and asked how he could help. ABC pointed him to Red Cloud Indian School and the rest is history. After countless meetings, trips back and forth by students and staff of both institutions, consultations and more, both of our organizations are better for it.

In the summer of 2015, our president, Fr. George attended the 22nd Annual Chairmen's Dinner at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. "A Salute to Social Justice" celebrated some of the many achievements of Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria during his 13 years as President; notably his promotion of international partnerships to assist people in need. One of the partnerships is domestic and it is with Red Cloud Indian School. A highlight of the evening was the declaration to name BSU's Institute for Social Justice for Martin Richard, an eight-year old boy who was killed by a bomb at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. The Institue was officially named the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice this past saturday. Martin's parents, Bill and Denise Richard, graduated from BSU in 1993. Pictured in the photo above are Bob Brave Heart, executive vice president of RCIS; Moira Coomes, curriculum director, Kathy Mohler-Faria, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria, Jillian Smith, high school English teacher and BSU alumna; and Fr. George Winzenburg, S.J.

Dr. Mohler-Faria, we cannot thank you enough for caring to make that phone call and we look forward to having you back on campus once again!
