Literacy Day Continues Monthly School-Wide Reading Program at Red Cloud Elementary

Alyssa, a first grader at Red Cloud Indian School says her two favorite things are reading and "making things that go with books." Every month, Alyssa and her classmates get to do just that when her teachers at Red Cloud's lower elementary school building bring all their students together for an afternoon of engaged learning that they call 'Literacy Day.'

"Literacy Day is a celebration of reading, writing, listening and speaking." says second grade teacher and AmeriCorps alum, Chelsea Fields. "Our students not only develop literacy skills, but a life-long love of reading."

Literacy Day began fifteen years ago at the Mackert elementary building to help students make connections with classroom literature and to create an ongoing positive relationship with books. Today, students look forward to the day each month when they can excitedly read and reread their favorite stories by themselves and with classmates. Meanwhile, teachers guide students through creative activities that drive home lessons from the literature and leave a lasting impression on their students.

This project in one of many literacy initiatives across the school system that aim to enable Red Cloud students, upon graduation, to meet or exceed the college success rates of their peers nationwide.
