Student Leads Teen and Young Adult Holiday Party

posted December 22, 2014

Summer Montileaux '17, a Lakota Children's Enrichment Youth Board member, won the ABC Summer of Service Award for her work with Lakota Children’s Enrichment earlier this year, securing a $1,000 grant to engage in more service…. and she is doing just that.

“My idea was to hold a Holiday Party for teens and to include community in the party — like the LCE Summits do — but with an added holiday bonus of gifts for teens who participate” said Summer. “Donations of toys from around the world arrive on the Reservation around the holidays –which is great– but teens largely are overlooked. I wanted to do something to lift everyone’s spirits and to give more teens and young adults a chance to help the community.”

On December 21, Summer hosted a Holiday Party for teens and young adults, from at the Rockyford School north of Red Cloud Indian School near the Badlands. The party for youth ages 13-24 reflects Summer’s passions: health and wellness, service and music.

The party featured the Reservation’s own Alter-Native rock band Scatter Their Own—featuring Red Cloud Alum Juliana Brown Eyes-Clifford '09—and a healthy meal and gifts specifically targeted to the young adult audience. VolunTEAMS also packaged food for local families, distributed boots and sneakers to local youth and everyone recieved an informational flyer on nutrition, designed by Summer.
