Students at Our Lady of Lourdes
Celebrate Holy Week with a 20+ Year Tradtion

posted April 17, 2014

With an April shower falling softly outside, all of the staff and students gathered in Fr.  Bill Pauly Hall today for a tradition that has been passed down for more than 20 years.

The fifth grade class at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in Porcupine – one of the two elementary schools in the Red Cloud School system – presented a Passion Play, telling the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Dan Wees and Sr. Susan Biegert, with some assistance from Fr. Peter Klink SJ, have been working with other school staff over the last two weeks as the students prepared for a special all-school Mass that would include the play. While much of the season’s attention lands on Easter Sunday, the entirety of Holy Week, it was pointed out, should draw our prayerful attention and reflection.

“It is a time to remember the story of the divine becoming human, leading to humanity being touched by the divine!” says Fr. Peter “It all has to do with being loved with a love unto death – and a love beyond death unto eternal life; it is truly a sacred and holy week!”

“Not only are we loved by God in Jesus, but we are also gifted by that love in our own gifts. The Passion Play reminds us that it is our call to develop our gifts, to find the holy in ourselves and in all things, and to make this world a better place,”Complete with simple costumes and props, Fr. Peter explains that the fifth grade Passion Play is meant to deepen the understanding of God’s love within all the students and staff.

The event was well-attended and an air of quiet reflection was evident in all. The Mass also included a song by Sr. Susan on her guitar and a brief reflection by Fr. Peter focusing on our sensitive caring for fellow classmates, family members, and the community.
