Red Cloud has been selected as one of three schools nationwide to participate in a program with the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). Through our collaboration, students have travelled to such locations as Hawaii and the North Pole. Red Cloud's collaboration with NASA has also provided students with access to satellite feeds from two of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (named GOES-8 and GOES-5), which are run by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Armed with data from these satellites, one student created real-time weather data which was used by a national news network. While our satellite dish is currently awaiting repair after sustaining damage from a hailstorm, these projects are waiting in the wings to be restarted as soon as the feeds are restored. A new collaboration with NASA began this year as Red Cloud was one of four high schools in the nation selected to be a part of NASA's THEMIS project, this time studying the Northern Lights. Magnetic sensors have been buried near Red Cloud's campus to study the changes in the Earth's magnetic fields to better understand why the northern lights have been shrinking in recent years. More pictures of the installation process are available in our photo gallery. |
