Heritage Center Receives Grant from Mary Chilton DAR Foundation
March 26, 2007
This month, the Mary Chilton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, through the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, generously provided the funding for the fabrication of moveable display walls for The Heritage Center Gallery at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The walls will allow a larger proportion of the Center's Native American art objects to be exhibited, improving the interpretive capacity and public accessibility of the Center.
The Mary Chilton DAR Foundation currently focuses on assisting museums, historical societies, and libraries, as well as innovative action and research projects in South Dakota. Taking as its guide the DAR philosophies of historical preservation, promotion of patriotism and support of education, the Foundation is dedicated to funding programs that enhance the quality of life in South Dakota .
The mission of The Heritage Center at is to collect, preserve and exhibit the fine arts and tribal arts of Native Americans. We will concentrate on the fine arts of all Native Americans and the tribal arts of the Lakota. We will promote the arts of Native Americans to bring a greater appreciation of their culture. The Center is located adjacent to the Red Cloud schools and therefore provides a unique historical and cultural education opportunity for the more than 600 students who attend the schools.
The Heritage Center offers a high quality collection of Native American fine arts and Lakota tribal arts, housed in a newly renovated facility, to local, national, and international visitors. One of the early successful cultural centers and museums located on an Indian reservation, it continues to be a model and source of inspiration for others.
