Dear Friends,
Together we are truly making the future brighter for the Lakota children on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation! So many of the children grow up surrounded by negative voices that would have them believe that they will always be poor and unemployed. At Red Cloud, they hear “of course you can!” and gain the confidence and competence to pursue their dreams.
We are so pr oud that 100% of this past year's graduates came to graduation with plans in place to continue their studies this fall. That means that they have HOPE and see an achievable future. We also had six recipients of the Gates Millennium Scholarship. No other American Indian school in the nation had more recipients than that. You are a partner in all of our efforts here and together we are making a tremendous difference in the lives of these Lakota boys and girls.
These are just a few more of the highlights from the 2005-06 school year:
- For the past five years, almost 95% of each year's graduating class planned to pursue more education at colleges and universities across the country.
- Elementary students continue to read thousands of books as part of the Accelerated Reader pr ogram; with most students reading one grade level above. The Accelerated M ath pr ogram is helping elementary students to gain important math skills.
- Red Cloud served almost 5,000 meals each week to children who often go without.
- To ensure regular school attendance which leads to academic success, Red Cloud buses traveled over 300,000 miles last year transporting students.
- Red Cloud high school students participated in community service pr ojects as part of Red Cloud's education of the heart.
These accomplishments would not be possible without many caring and generous hearts like yours. Through your faithful friendship and commitment to helping the children served through Red Cloud that they have HOPE. Red Cloud is a success story because of you! Thank you for your continued support. We depend on it. Lila wopila tanka and May the Good Lord bless you.
Sincerely and gratefully,
Fr. Peter Klink, SJ
