Students, parents, staff and friends of Red Cloud Indian School gathered on Tuesday, August 17 to celebrate Fr. Peter Klink SJ's 25 years of ministry on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Fr. Klink announced last May that he would be going on a sabbatical this fall, and that Fr. George Winzenburg SJ, former director of the Sioux Spiritual Center, would be taking over as president.

More than 200 people attended a Mass of celebration, concelebrated by Fr. Rick Abert SJ, superior of the Jesuit community at Red Cloud, along with Fr. John Paul SJ, Fr. Klink and Fr. Winzenburg.

“In the Lakota language, there is no word for good-bye," said Fr. Abert during his homily. "So we are not saying good-bye, but toksá—see you later.”

Following dinner, attendees gathered in Cuny Commons at Red Cloud High School for a traditional meal of beef stew, fry bread and wojapi, and a presentation by Norma Tibbitts, chairperson of the board of directors.

The evening concluded with a powwow in the Little Gym, with drum groups and dancers celebrating Fr. Klink's legacy with song and dance.

Shannon Grooms is a member of Our Lady of the Sioux Church. She taught Religion at Red Cloud Elementary School for four years until the birth of their oldest daughter. Shannon, her husband, and her two daughters live on a ranch nine miles north of Oglala, South Dakota.
