Where did the summer go? We’re not sure either, but the Red Cloud Indian School and Our Lady of Lourdes campuses are already buzzing with activity, as teachers and staff gear up for the beginning of classes at the end of August. Classrooms have been decorated, books have been organized and lesson plans are in place—all that’s needed now is the ringing of the school bell to usher in the 2010/11 academic year. "We are thrilled to welcome our new students and to have our returning students back on campus,” says Fr. George Winzenburg SJ, the new president of the Red Cloud Indian School system. “Their energy and enthusiasm for learning bring life to our classrooms and prompt success not only there but in all of our student activities, sports, and other programs. We all look forward to an exciting school year.” Students at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge and Our Lady of Lourdes in Porcupine will begin the school year on Monday, August 23, with classes beginning for students in the elementary and middle school, and freshmen orientation happening at Red Cloud High School. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will return to campus for the start of classes on Tuesday, August 24. When students arrive on-campus, they’ll be greeted by a number of new faces, including James Mattern, principal at Red Cloud High School, and Theresa Lessert, principal of Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary. Robin Johnson, well known at Red Cloud over the years for her leadership, will also assume the role of dean of students. “We feel very fortunate to continue to attract a number of educational leaders from our area,” says Bob Brave Heart, superintendent of schools. “All of us look forward to working with our new and returning administrators, teachers and staff to provide an education that is unparalleled in Indian country.” When students return this fall, they will also be welcomed by a renovated library, an integral part of the organization that offers a number of academic resources and support to students. Parents and students are encouraged to review the academic calendars for the fall semester, which are updated regularly online. Registration for new and current students is ongoing, with the last day to register for the fall semester being Friday, September 3.
