43rd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show kicks off June 5 with special preview event
posted on May 27, 2010
The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School will open the 43rd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show on Saturday, June 5 with a special preview showing. The event begins at 12 noon and coincides with the first annual all-class reunion.
The annual exhibit, which brings more than 10,000 visitors to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation each year and features more than 200 pieces of art by over 90 artists, officially opens on Sunday, June 6 and runs through August 15. Native artists from across the United States and Canada are represented in the show. A variety of mediums are presented, from paintings and photography to sculpture and traditional beadwork.
“This art show makes Red Cloud graduates, and friends of the mission, very proud indeed,” says Charles Trimble, a 1952 graduate of the school. “Not all schools are privileged to have a world-class show and collection of Native American art like Red Cloud has, especially in the Northern Plains region. Each year, this show is representative of the outstanding work that was laid by the late Brother C.M. Simon SJ, and now presently, by Peter Strong.”
During the preview event, artists represented in the show will be available to meet with guests to The Heritage Center, and talk about both their work and life as an artist. Awards in 24 different categories will also be announced, with $7000 in prizes awarded.
“We hope to create a supportive environment where emerging and established artists can not only be recognized for their work, but also gain national exposure as they move forward with their careers as artists,” says Peter Strong, director of The Heritage Center.
The special preview is open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 100 Mission Drive on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 605/867-8257.
