Seniors celebrate graduation with Baccalaureate Mass

The Red Cloud High School Senior Class of 2010 celebrated Baccalaureate Mass at Holy Rosary Church on Wednesday, May 19, kicking off graduation events at the school. Fr. Peter Klink SJ, president of Red Cloud, presided over the Mass, which began with a traditional Lakota honoring song, followed by the Wazilya Rite, a traditional Lakota purifying ceremony.

Students were encouraged to let their light and lives be of service and good, wherever they go. Before the end of Mass, Nick Dressel, principal of Red Cloud High School, presented each senior with a medal of St. Ignatius. The seniors also gathered around the altar for the traditional blessings from the teachers that have guided them throughout their time at Red Cloud.

Afterwards, graduates and their friends and family gathered in Serena Hall for a meal. Graduation will be on Saturday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at the Bob Clifford Football Field, weather permitting. The 39 candidates for graduation are:

Shannon Grooms is a member of Our Lady of the Sioux Church. She taught Religion at Red Cloud Elementary School for four years until the birth of their oldest daughter. Shannon, her husband, and her two daughters live on a ranch nine miles north of Oglala, SD.
