Red Cloud High School student receives Jesuit scholarship, plans to attend Marquette University this fall
posted on May 19, 2010
Laree Pourier, a senior at Red Cloud High School, has been awarded The Jesuit High School Scholarship by Marquette University in Milwaukee, where she will begin classes this fall toward a degree in secondary education with a concentration in English. The scholarship recognizes the value of a Jesuit education and is awarded to one student from each of the 48 U.S. Jesuit high schools in the nation.
“Laree exemplifies what a Red Cloud High School graduate should be. She is open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, committed to social justice and a very spiritual person,” says Nick Dressel, high school principal. “I am extremely proud of Laree’s accomplishments and I wish her the very best of luck at Marquette next year. They are getting not just an outstanding student, but more importantly, an outstanding person.”
A high school standout who has maintained an overall GPA of above 3.5, Pourier has been active in cheerleading, cross-country and track.
“I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to go to college,” says Pourier. “Marquette has always been my first choice for college and words cannot express how excited I am to begin classes this fall.
“I feel both proud and honored to be graduating from Red Cloud, a Lakota and Jesuit school,” she continues. “And I’m exceptionally grateful to all of my teachers and my family, especially Paddy Gilger SJ for all the assistance he has give me in applying for the necessary financial aid that has made my college dreams a reality.”
In addition to The Jesuit High School Scholarship, Pourier has also been awarded a grant from The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), which focuses on first-generation students who have demonstrated potential for success and are motivated to achieve their educational goals.
Pourier graduates this Saturday from Red Cloud High School.
