Students at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary raise funds for leukemia and lymphoma
posted on February 10, 2010

Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in Porcupine will host a Valentine’s Day Carnival on Friday, February 12, 2010 as part of their efforts to raise money for Pennies for Patients, a national campaign that raises awareness and funds for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Students, families and community members of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are invited to attend the carnival from 4:30-7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. All proceeds from the carnival and concessions will be donated to the cause.

“Our students have taken a strong interest in the work that The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society does, as it is a disease that effects people of all ages, including young people,” says Alice Phelps, principal. “They’re really excited about this event, and we’re happy to support our Lakota youth in this endeavor.”

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 53,240 people in the United States this year, according to the society. These blood cancers will account for nearly 9.5 percent of the deaths from cancer based on an estimated 562,340 total cancer-related deaths.

Pennies for Patients raises millions of dollars each year for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is the fifth year that Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary has participated in the campaign.

Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations. Please consider an online gift.
