Scholarships available to Red Cloud students wishing to further their education over the summer As part of a partnership with the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, fully-paid scholarships have been made available to students at Red Cloud High School, Red Cloud Middle School and Our Lady of Lourdes Middle School to attend summer camps in engineering, geology and computer science, as well as a “space adventures” program. The various camps are available to Red Cloud students in grades 6-12, and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must fill out an application to be considered for a scholarship. “This partnership between Red Cloud Indian School and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is an outstanding opportunity for our students to engage in learning over the summer, and to gain a competitive edge in careers that are in-demand,” says T.J. Lynch, director of the 21st Century Program at Red Cloud, a program that funds the scholarships. “The students get to live on a college campus, and work alongside students from all over the state.” The Science Technology Engineering Preview Summer camps (STEPS) give a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Campers participate in activities that will give them hands-on experience with high-tech equipment and processes. Camps are available to young men and women that attend Red Cloud. “Socket-to-Me” is for young women interested in learning more about how computers work, computer programming, or careers in computer science and engineering. And the “Space Adventures” camp is for teenagers wanting to learn more about science, physics and space-related topics. Click here to learn more about the STEPS Engineering Camp for Boys. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
