Alumni return to Red Cloud for summer job opportunities
posted on June 08, 2009
Five alumni have returned to Red Cloud Indian School for the summer as they take time away from their college careers for exciting job opportunities on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
From working with tourists to assisting in the Heritage Center, alumni Charity Wilson, Ron Kills Warrior, James LaPointe, Jordan Herman and Carmen Fourd have been hired for the summer to continue the everyday work that happens at Red Cloud.
“I really just wanted to give back to the school that has helped me so much throughout my lifetime,” says 1996 Red Cloud High School graduate Ronald Kills Warrior. “They have given me so much in terms of a quality education that has led me to be where I am today,” he says.
Ronald joins ‘03 graduate James LaPoint and recent ’09 graduate Charity Wilson in the Red Cloud Indian School Institutional Relations Office as tour guides. All three alumni are currently in their second year of summer employment at Red Cloud as they undergo a weeklong course which teaches them about the history of Red Cloud to share with local and foreign visitors.
“Even as a student here at Red Cloud, I could see that the institution provided a great working environment with interesting people,” says James. “Now that I actually work here I get a chance to be a part of this amazing community that works so hard to educated their students as they also educate the outside community about the history and culture of the Lakota people,” he says.
Other alumni joining Red Cloud staff for the summer are Carmen Fourd a 2004 graduate and Jordan Herman, a ’06 graduate who will be working in the Heritage Center assisting with customers.
“The job is a great opportunity for me to learn about the behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the school going,” says Carmen.
Sharing her same sentiments, Jordan, a current Creighton history major shares his excitement about the job. “It’s really interesting for me, to learn more about the history of Red Cloud, and meet all the exciting people who come from a very diverse group of nations who visit the Heritage Center and to learn about their cultures while I share mine with them,” he says.
Working through the month of August, these alumni and many others will be available for the remainder of their summer vacations before heading back to their respective colleges across the Nation. Red Cloud Indian School and the Heritage Center are open throughout the summer from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m.-5p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
