Red Cloud students attend summer leadership camp in Colorado
posted on July 02, 2009

Seven students from Red Cloud High School are improving on their leadership skills during the summer as they have been selected to attend the 2009 Outward Bound Leadership Camp in Leadville, Colorado.

Held from June 28-29, 2009, the Outward Bound Leadership Camp invited young leaders from across the United States to the Colorado wilderness to take part in skill building and leadership activities as they use outdoor expeditions to inspire leadership, responsibility and environmental awareness in young adults.

“This camp teaches young student- leaders how to improve on and develop upon their leadership skills within a wilderness setting, that will enable them to utilize the skills learned within the school setting, and we hope to encourage that,” says Jennifer Schaer, athletic director for Red Cloud High School and camp chaperone.

During the five-day camp, students completed a variety of outdoor activities, which included a high-ropes course, rock climbing exhibition and 13,000 ft mountain climb hiking trip under the direction of Outward Bound leaders.

“I really learned a lot about myself and my peers during this camp,” says senior Blaine Leftwich. “It was a awesome experience as I learned to live outside my comfort zone and it was really encouraging to get involved with the exciting obstacles that they had set for us,” he says.

Nominated by their teachers, Red Cloud seniors Jacey Twiss, Blaine Leftwich, Shelby McGhee, Laree Pourier, Sarah Herman, Adonica Little and Becky Condon attended the five-day leadership camp in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.
