Our Lady of Lourdes eighth graders cap off school year with trip to Denver Eighth grade students at Our Lady of Lourdes School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation recently celebrated the end of their middle school careers with an educational trip to Denver, Colorado. An annual excursion, it was the culmination of the students’ hard work in, and commitment to, their studies. “We take this trip every year to celebrate our students’ upcoming graduation. However, it also serves as an opportunity for our students to continue to learn and interact with people outside of the reservation as they experience firsthand many of the subjects they’ve been taught throughout the year,” says Alice Phelps, principal. “The trip also affords our students the opportunity to honor the friendships created at Our Lady of Lourdes, and look ahead to the next milestone in their life: high school.” During the three-day trip, this year held May 15-17, the students visited the Denver Zoo, The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Art Museum and the downtown aquarium. The students also attended a show at the Denver Center of Performing Arts, and had dinner at Famous Dave’s Barbeque and La Casa Bonita. On the final day of the trip, the eighth graders rode rollercoasters at Six Flags Elitch Gardens, an amusement park. “It was a fun trip, and a very exciting and memorable way to finish out the school year with my friends and classmates,” says Patrick Beard, an eighth grader. “For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to share with others before we leave for high school.” Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations.
