Forty-three seniors are on the last-leg of their high school careers, eagerly anticipating graduation from Red Cloud Indian School. With a solid education and bright futures ahead of them, members of the senior class of 2009 will graduate from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation School on May 23, 2009, with a number of other events leading up to their special day. “Each graduating class has a way of distinguishing themselves from the others, and the outstanding young men and women in the 2009 class are no different,” says Nick Dressel, high school principal. “I think what I love most about this class is their sense of humor and positive attitude. They’ve been a fun group to work and learn alongside with, and the positive mark they’ve left on this institution will not be forgotten.” Most recently, seven students from the senior class—all women—were honored with the coveted Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship, the second highest in the nation and representative of 16 percent of this year’s class. Four students were named regional Horatio Alger Scholars, with one of those students being the only student in the state of South Dakota to receive the national honor. Also, 96 percent of this year’s class have announced their plans for post-secondary education or training after graduation. In celebration of their achievements, a number of activities have been announced to mark this pivotal moment in these Crusaders’ lives. The annual graduation powwow has been set for May 15, with a feed beginning at 5 p.m. and the Grand Entry starting at 6:30 p.m. Held each year in the Paul Tizzy Trout Fieldhouse, the graduation candidates will be honored by their families with feathers and a special Lakota celebration. The Baccalaureate Mass has been announced by May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Mission Church on the Red Cloud campus. During the Mass, seniors will have a chance to reflect on their high school careers and pray with one another one last time. The commencement ceremony on May 23 will begin at 10 a.m. outside on the Coach Bob Clifford Memorial Field. The senior class speaker will be named prior to the ceremony, and friends and family of Red Cloud Indian School are all invited.
