The Heritage Center presents three new exhibits of Native art, now on display
posted on September 17, 2009
The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School is presenting three new exhibits through May 2010, displaying work from its renowned permanent collection.
“Recent Acquisitions 2009” displays artwork that has been purchased by or donated to The Heritage Center within the past 12 months, says Mary Bordeaux, curator.
“With a wide range of styles and mediums, these exhibits will give visitors to the gallery a glimpse into the breadth and depth of our permanent collection,” says Bordeaux. “Many of the pieces that have recently been acquired come from our annual art show, and others have come from the various Native art markets throughout the country and from donations from art collectors.”
The second exhibit, “Untitled: The Naming of Art,” presents artwork that has never been named. Ranging from portraits to abstracts, the pieces represent a variety of Native artists and their vision, but leave it up to the viewer to interpret and look deeper as to why each piece was created and left untitled.
Finally, “Pacific Editions Limited” offers a collection of limited edition silk-screen prints created by indigenous artists of the Northwest coast, British Columbia and the woodlands of Ontario. The images in the exhibit are inspired by ancient traditional designs found on cultural artifacts, by objects used in tribal life, oral histories, and scenes occurring in nature and family crests. The prints have been donated since 1977 by long-time supporters Bill and Sue Hensler.
