College students to perform play on contemporary Lakota people at Red Cloud Indian School Eleven student actors from Alma College in Michigan will be on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation May 14 for two special performances of a new play about the Crazy Horse Memorial and contemporary Lakota people. The production, under the direction of Alma College Communication Professor JoAnn R. Gilbert, will take place at 10 a.m. for Red Cloud Middle School and Our Lady of Lourdes Middle School, and at 1:30 p.m. for Red Cloud High School. Both performances will take place in the Little Gym on the Red Cloud Indian School campus. “The performance tells two stories: one about the Crazy Horse Memorial and its sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, and the second about contemporary Lakota people,” says Gilbert. “It gives voice to incredible Native American people, in their own words.” Taken from interviews with members of the Ziolkowski family and Lakota tribe, the 50 minute performance is intended to inspire more people to learn about the Lakota people, as well as open awareness to the needs of the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is still under construction in the Black Hills region. “For Dr. Gilbert to shed light on these important stories is humbling, as it pays tribute to the culture of our people—both those continuing the work today, and those who have come before us,” says Tina Merdanian, director of institutional relations at Red Cloud. “Now, many others will learn about, and understand, the values of our Lakota heritage: humility, respect and responsibility. We are thrilled to welcome the school to our campus.” “I hope to raise awareness and advocate for the memorial to help a huge dream become realized, and for the contemporary oppression of the Lakota people who live in the poorest county in the nation, some of them for their entire lives,” Gilbert says. Two additional performances will take place on May 17 at the Crazy Horse Memorial. Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations.
