Check out photos from opening weekend The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School celebrated the opening of the 42nd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show on Saturday, May 30 with a special preview and artist market. Boasting a record-breaking 71 artists showcasing 200 pieces—from paintings to sculptures to a 50 pound beaded dress—the art show welcomed over 100 visitors on opening day. “Amazing” didn’t even work for contributing artist Galen LaRouche in describing the art show. “The quality from all of the artists in this year’s exhibit is really incredible,” he said. “The art show shows the love that the people here have for the rich artistic heritage of Native Americans.” “It really is phenomenal—so proud, and so beautiful,” said Fr. Peter Klink SJ, president of Red Cloud Indian School. Looking at a piece by Keith Brave Heart, a frequent artist in the yearly exhibit, he said, “The work here simply screams ‘Yes, you can,’ as it reflects the creativity and giftedness of the Native American art world.” Art collectors and onlookers from across the Dakotas and beyond attended the special preview, which began with a luncheon for the artists and their guests. Peter Strong, director of The Heritage Center, welcomed the guests, highlighting some of the outstanding works about to be unveiled. “It is an inspiration for all of us to finally see the hard work and creativity that went into putting this show together,” he said. “I especially have to commend the artists for everything they have done to make this show possible.” The art show continues to attract a young generation of artists, including Denton Lafferty, who despite his age is a six-year veteran of the show. “This exhibit appeals to a younger generation in particular, with the care and consideration given to a spectrum of mediums,” he said. “It’s encouraging to see all the young artists and their new, groundbreaking work.” The art show runs through August 9, and is open daily from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
