New artist market to usher in 42nd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show
posted on May 26, 2009

Red Cloud Indian School’s Heritage Center will open the 42nd Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show on Saturday, May 30 with a special preview showing and, for the first time this year, an artist market.

“I’m looking forward to the special event, as it will give me an opportunity to see what other Native American artists are working on,” says Henry Payer Jr., an artist who’s work was selected to be published on this year’s poster promoting the exhibition. “This art show is such a great place for myself, and others, to give back to our people by sharing our culture with others, and raising awareness about the history of our people both on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and elsewhere.”

The annual exhibit, which brings more than 10,000 visitors to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation each year and features more than 150 pieces of art by 50 artists, officially opens on Sunday, May 31 and runs through August 9.

As part of the special preview, the artist market will feature local Native American artwork in a variety of mediums. Artists showcased in this year’s show will be available for questions about their artwork, with all pieces available for purchase.

“This is a unique opportunity for guests to the art show to learn firsthand about the outstanding work that makes up this year’s art show,” says Peter Strong, director of The Heritage Center. “It is an honor for all of us at Red Cloud to host so many wonderful artists under one roof.”

The special preview and artist market are open to the public and will begin at 1 p.m. in The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School. The Heritage Center is located at 100 Mission Drive on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
