Students from Pine Ridge, Rapid City gather for cross-cultural, spiritual exchange Red Cloud High School will welcome more than 50 students from St. Thomas More Catholic School in Rapid City, South Dakota, to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on Wednesday, November 18 as part of a cross-cultural, spiritual exchange between the two schools. This is the second time the two schools have gotten together for a day of activities and team building. “Last year, our sophomore English classes began a pen-pal writing project with students at St. Thomas More,” explains Joe Hoover, director of campus ministry at Red Cloud. “This visit builds off of that initial writing project and a visit by Red Cloud to St. Thomas More, allowing students from the two schools to meet each other face-to-face, learn about one another and share in a unique cultural experience. “They will be able to continue to build strong bonds amongst each other while breaking down the typical stereotypes that might be formed between them,” he adds. Student leaders at Red Cloud, along with teachers from the Spiritual Formation Department, have been collaborating on events for the day. The Red Cloud students hope to return the same hospitality they received last year in Rapid City. “We were able to learn so much about these peers that we were writing back and forth with at St. Thomas More last year,” says Frankie Sioux Bob, a junior at Red Cloud. “It will be an honor to show off our new high school, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and who we are as young, proud Lakota people.” In addition to a tour of the campus, the students will enjoy a traditional Lakota meal, participate in a ceremonial smudging and sweat, and tour the Pine Ridge Reservation. All activities are designed for cultural prayer, sharing and exchange. conditions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations. Please consider an online gift. |
