Red Cloud students get jump-start on academic year with summer school program Just because summer vacation has officially started doesn’t mean that learning has stopped for students at Red Cloud Indian School. In fact, classrooms at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation school are filled with eager students taking time away from leisure activities to continue their learning throughout the month of June. More than 75 students are taking part in the school’s summer program, which offers classroom instruction and extra-curricular activities for students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Most of the students’ academic activities revolve around getting a jump-start on the upcoming school year. “The summer school program is designed to enhance the learning experiences we offer the students, as we focus on the key areas of reading, writing, math and Lakota language classes,” says Jennifer Sierra, Red Cloud Elementary School principal. “It gives students the opportunity to continue to grow with their education by taking a closer look at what their interests and needs are in the classroom.” For three weeks, students study Monday-Thursday, and go on “incentive fieldtrips” to local and regional landmarks on Friday. “The fieldtrips are designed to offer students a little fun during their summer as an incentive for the hard work and commitment they put into their studies during the week,” Sierra says. Summer classes are open to any and all Red Cloud students interested in attending. Dedicated volunteers and teachers who take a month out of their vacation to enhance learning lead the summer courses. The normal school day lasts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a lunch served and buses running daily. Tweet, tweet! We're on Twitter. Follow us at www.twitter.com/redcloudschool.
