Red Cloud High School Senior Season Frank has received the coveted Horatio Alger National Scholarship, one of only 107 awards given nationally. The $20,000 scholarship recognizes Season for her excellence in academics, and desire to continue her education in college.
"I am surprised, and feel a sense of relief and thankfulness that I have a way to pay for college," says Frank. "This is a big accomplishment. It seemed like a lot of work, but it paid off in the end."
In addition, she will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2008 National Scholars Conference in Washington, DC, this April. In the nation's capitol, she will visit the US Supreme Court, hear briefings from government leaders and get to meet with members of the Horatio Alger Association. High school counselors and teacher Elisabeth Ellington assisted Season in applying for the scholarship.
Season has held an overall GPA of 3.65 since coming to Red Cloud in the fall of 2004, receiving highest honors in both her English and government classes. This past summer, she was selected by her teachers to be one of five students to travel to Leadville, Colorado, to participate in the Outward Bound Wilderness Leadership Camp. Also, this past November she was a contestant in the 2008 Miss Teen South Dakota Pageant. She has also participated in cheerleading and theatre while in school.
Although undecided as to which college to attend, Season knows that she would like to study nursing, and has already been accepted to South Dakota State University and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
"My inspiration comes from my mother. She has always made a big deal of education and has continuously reminded me that my homework and grades come before everything else," says Season. "I also give credit to Red Cloud teachers and staff. They have challenged me to maintain my GPA and encouraged me to pursue college."
Nick Dressel, high school principal, says he is very proud of Season. "She has worked hard for this scholarship, and deserves it. She is an excellent role model for all Red Cloud students," he says.
