Middle School students participate in "Girls Day" at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
posted on April 22, 2008

On Tuesday April 15, 2008, students from Red Cloud Middle School had the opportunity to take part in the 5th Annual Girls Day at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Ten young ladies along with their teacher Jaimie Hoek took a 2 hour trip tuesday to Rapid City, SD to participate in the SDSM&T sponsored Girl’s Day. The students from Red Cloud got to see first hand what college life was like as they met with college professors and were invited to take part in activities geared towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

One activity in particular tested the girls’ engineering and mathematical skills as the girls constructed bridges from tooth picks and marshmallows. The girls were told that their bridges would be judged on their individual cost effectiveness and strength. The girls did a great job as they came up with a number of well articulated bridge designs.

The students were astonished as they learned why popcorn pops, how chocolate is made, how bones are removed from rock and how work environments are created. The girls listened to presenters and professionals in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“It was a worth wild trip,” says teacher Jaimie Hoek, “It really set the tone for these girls as they explore possible careers and they progress into high school and then college.”
