With a representative democratic society, there's no more important responsibility that citizens have than the election of its leaders. And with that in mind, members of the Red Cloud High School Student Council hosted the Oglala Sioux Tribal Presidential Debate Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Moderated by the Student Body President, candidates Russell Means and Theresa Two Bulls answered questions orchestrated by a panel of Student Council members. The questions were based on concerns the students had about the economy development, public safety, government relations, heath care and education. Members of Robin Johnson's Government Class helped with the research and development of the debate questions. Since 1998, members of the Student Council have made it their objective to get their voices and the voices of the Oglala Sioux Tribal candidates heard by hosting this debate. Moderator and Student Body President Ryan McLaughlin stated that the debate was an educational experience. "It was very interesting to meet the candidates and hear what they had to say about the issues that have an impact on our everyday lives. I'm glad that I had the chance to be the moderator for the debate as I felt it taught me how to present myself in an event such as this," says McLaughlin. The debate had a great turnout of parents, faculty and local community members who came to listen to the issues concerning the students at Red Cloud High School. "The debate was a good opportunity for us, as students, to question the candidates on their proposed objectives for issues concerning our people," says Junior Class President Laree Pourier. "I felt very lucky to meet these two very nice people and hear, first-hand, their platforms. I would encourage all the voters to really listen to what they have to say and seriously think about how their vote will affect the youth of the Oglala Sioux Tribe," says Pourier. Voting for the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council will take place November 4, 2008. Join us in our mission of educating the mind and spirit of the Lakota people, now and for future generations.
