Carl J. Artman, an enrolled member of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin and the current Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior, will speak at Red Cloud Indian School’s Academic Excellence Banquet on Wednesday, May 14 on the Red Cloud campus. “Since first meeting Mr. Artman two years ago, we’ve hoped to bring him to the reservation to meet with our students, and hear the inspiring stories that are happening each and every day on the Pine Ridge,” says Fr. Peter Klink SJ, president of Red Cloud Indian School. “It is an honor to welcome him to the reservation and to our school. The focus is the students, and I trust that Mr. Artman appreciates this opportunity. ” “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to meet a Presidential-appointee from Washington, D.C., and for Mr. Artman to see the excellent work that the students at Red Cloud have been doing over the past year,” says Bob Brave Heart, superintendent of schools. And, “it’s an excellent opportunity to highlight the next generation of leaders.” The United States Senate confirmed Artman in March of 2007. He is the tenth Assistant Secretary to be confirmed since Congress established the position in the 1970s. In addition to carrying out the Department’s trust responsibilities regarding the management of tribal and individual Indian trust lands and assets, the Assistant Secretary is also responsible for promoting the self-determination and economic self-sufficiency of the nation’s 561 federally recognized American Indian Alaska Native tribes and their 1.9 million enrolled members. Artman has legal and business experience that includes working for the Oneida Tribe as Director of Federal Affairs and Chief Legal Counsel. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia College in Missouri, a master in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a juris doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. During his visit, Artman will tour both the Pine Ridge Reservation and Red Cloud School, and meet with student leaders and faculty.
