Pine Ridge and Red Cloud ended up being seeded number one and two following pool play Friday in the Custer Invitational volleyball tournament, but in bracket play on Saturday, Red Cloud built up some momentum in the first two rounds and used that to beat Pine Ridge 25-22 and 25-21 in the championship match. “We played well, but more importantly, we played together as a team,” said Robin Johnson, Red Cloud's head coach. ”Our two seniors, Ida Clarke and Lisa Bear Robe, provided leadership when we needed it. Desirae Blacksmith was a tough server and Marque Lunderman was solid all over the floor. When we made mistakes, we didn't let it get us down. It was a good team effort.” Red Cloud beat Moorcroft Wyo. in the first round 25-28 and 25-16, and Newell in the semis 25-22 and 25-23. Pine Ridge downed Rapid City Christian 25-16 and 25-20 in the first round and beat Custer 27-25 and 25-18 in the semis. Red Cloud earned the number two seed for the bracket play by getting by Moorcroft 25-23, 25-15, out lasting New Underwood 25-23, 22-25 and 25-18, and beating Newell 25-17, 24-26, and 25-19. Danielle Locust and Amber Steele rounded out the starting lineup with Charity Wilson and Amber Blacksmith coming off the bench.
