From Wednesday, December 19 thru Saturday, December 22 Red Cloud High School will be participating in the 31 st Annual Lakota Nation Invitational. The Lakota Nation Invitation consists of sixteen different schools across the Dakotas participating in a number of activities. This year Red Cloud High School will take teams and individual students to participate in events such as the Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Wrestling Invite, the Lakota Language Bowl, Knowledge Bowl, Hand Game tournament and the Art Show.

This year, the Red Cloud Boys’ Varsity team is seeded number one on the bracket. Expectations are high this year for the boys as they bring back eight of their top players from last year. Included on this years’ roster is Christian McGhee who made it onto last years’ LNI All- Tourney Team. McGhee was also voted as an Athlete of the week in the Rapid City Journal.

The Red Cloud girl’s team is seeded number three in the Tournament. The team competed in the State Tournament last spring as a young team with no seniors on their roster. Returning this year are seniors, Ida Clarke and Lisa Bear Robe, outstanding juniors, Marque Lunderman, joined by, Desirae Blacksmith, Danielle Locust and Shaina Clifford. The Lady Crusaders’ new coach is Jerome LeBeau, a 1995 graduate of Red Cloud who was a member and leader on the Red Cloud State A championship Team in 1995.

This year, wrestling coach, Clay Leonard will be taking 16 wrestlers to compete in the wrestling tournament. Charles Eagle Bull, a senior will be competing in the Heavy Weight division. Eagle Bull is an accomplished wrestler which includes a tournament win last week at the West River Conference Tournament in Mission, SD. Grey Hamilton, also another accomplished wrestler who took 2nd in the 215 weight class in the West River Conference. This years’ wrestling team includes a number of great athletes including two up and coming females Lariah High Hawk and Katelyn Davis.

Sports aren’t the only thing on students’ minds as six students will be participating in the Knowledge Bowl. The Knowledge Bowl consists of a number of academic tests that students will take in competition against one another. Not only will the students compete against one another, they will compete in the Team Quiz Bowl Competition in which they will test their academic abilities against other schools. Advanced Math, Biology, English and History are among the many subjects that the students will be tested in.

Students will also be participating in the Lakota Language Bowl. Students will be tested in both written and verbal language as they share their knowledge of the Lakota Language.

The Lakota Nation Invitational is also an exciting time for the Heritage Center. In a continuous effort to showcase and promote Lakota artists the Red Cloud Heritage Center has teamed up with Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries to Co-sponsor the Lakota Nation Invitational Art Show. The Art Show will exhibit artwork made by students from all participating schools.

This year, the Lakota Nation Invitational promises to be a very interesting time for the Red Cloud Crusaders as they test their academic and athletic skills against the best in the Dakotas.
